Incite – born Tyler Johnston – was raised in a small town New Hamburg, Ontario for his younger childhood years. At the age of 10 his family moved to a more rural area in Tavistock, Ontario.
Due to the changed environment, Incite was provided with an abundance of time for self-reflection and thought; however, as a teen this time was mostly filled with playing online games, watching movies and TV, and playing sports.
His music influences growing up stemmed much from his older brother, listening to a lot of rock and rap. His favourite bands were Blink 182 and The Used, as well as favourite rapper and ultimate influence in his hip hop career Eminem. Throughout his entire childhood and teenage years music was always a huge factor in his life. Growing up, no matter what activity he was in, whether sitting in class or playing sports, Incite would always be playing songs in his head or humming or singing the lyrics. In grade 6 he purchased his first guitar, a cheap start-up kit with a 69 fender strat replica and a small amp. He taught himself to play a few songs from his favourite bands and for the first time began to form the idea of actually creating music; though for many years this was just an idea and sports took main priority.
It wasn’t until the summer of 2009 heading into first year of university at Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo, Ontario that he discovered his talent and passion for writing rhymes and rapping. He first discovered this talent the night his Grandfather past away in what he believes was a gift. “Honestly I believe it was a gift given to me out of desperation; I was feeling lost and unsure about what I wanted in life, seeming to have lost passion for all the things that once gave me it. I saw my Grandfather in such a decrepit condition and when I got home I just felt completely numb, felt nothing, no emotion, couldn’t sleep, and after a while just sitting in my room, I grabbed a pen and some lined paper and just started writing rhymes thinking of the style and rhyme schemes of Eminem and mimicking them in my own lyrics. I sat and wrote for hours until I had finished my first rap entitled All About Me at Three; I didn’t stop writing until a bit after 3am before going to bed.” Incite later discovered his Grandfather past at nearly the exact time he finished writing and finally got some sleep. It was then he realized that this wasn’t just some random act and felt there must have been a connection between his Grandfather passing and his writing his first rap. He took this as his Grandfather or a higher being guiding him towards his ultimate passion, being a Hip Hop artist.
